Delaware Cities

Delaware's Eastern Shore

Bordered by the Atlantic Ocean, Delaware's Eastern Shore boasts a comfortable climate and miles of sandy coastline. It’s also just a short car-trip from Philadelphia, Baltimore, and Washington D.C., making it a popular vacation destination. Visitors flock to its famed resort towns, which include Bethany Beach, Rehoboth Beach, and Dewey Beach.

Although it’s one of the smallest states in the US with a total area of less than 2000 square miles, Delaware had a big role in the nation’s history. It was the first state to ratify the US Constitution in 1787, an act that gave Delaware its proud nickname “The First State”.

Despite its small size, Delaware has a lot to offer residents and tourists alike – including tax-free shopping! Its capital city, Dover, is home to the Dover International Speedway, also known as the Monster Mile. Delaware also features a number of natural attractions, such as its sandy beaches, the Thousand Acre Marsh, and the 80-foot high Great Dune.

Delaware’s most populous city is Wilmington. Originally settled by Swedish colonists in 1638, it is considered one of the nation’s first permanent settlements. Today, Wilmington’s pedestrian-friendly attractions, like Riverfront Wilmington and the Market Street Mall, combine with its diverse architecture to give the city a vibrant yet historically relevant appeal.

Delaware -
The "First State"

Delaware borders the Atlantic Ocean. Its southern beaches and beach towns are a major draw. They are all unique, ranging from tranquil stretches of protected shoreline to resort towns and busy vacation centers. Delaware’s cities and towns have lots of things to see and do. If you can tear yourself away from the water, Northern Delaware has a host of cultural attractions as well — The Winterthur Museum in the Brandywine Valley is just one of many. Delaware has also been known as the state of incorporation for many large U.S. businesses. This growing economy makes it a favorable place to live.

Delaware is known as the "First State" because it was the first of the 13 colonies to ratify the United States Constitution. Ratification occurred on December 7, 1787.

The name "Delaware" comes from the title of Thomas West, 3rd Baron De La Warr, erstwhile governor of the colony of Virginia.
